General Troubleshooting

There are several standard techniques that can be used to troubleshoot problems. Using the tools and documentation provided with your hardware and software is a good starting place. Problems can be caused by issues as diverse as incompatible hardware, outdated drivers, loose connections, incorrect configurations, or other issues. You can use a variety of resources to isolate the problem and determine if it is a known issue with a documented solution.

Soldering

Soldering is the joining of metals by a fusion of alloys which have relatively low melting points". In other words, you use a metal that has a low melting point to adhere the surfaces to be soldered together. Consider that soldering is more like gluing with molten metal, unlike welding where the base metals are actually melted and combined. Soldering is also a must have skill for all sorts of electrical and electronics work. It is also a skill that must be taught correctly and developed with practice.

ESC Programming

Although not required for the quad copter, the ESC can be programmed with a number of different options. This is useful to understand in case the ESC is accidentally programmed and needs to be factory reset. In programming mode, each option is specified by a unique set of tones. In our Mystery ESCs, the first set of tones indicate whether the break should be turned on or off (break will stop the motors instead of letting them wind down on a minimum speed signal).

Tire Gluing

First we take the tire, and punch holes in it using the leather punch. Jarodd likes to do two 1/8? holes on opposite sides of the tire. Why punch holes in perfectly good rubber you ask? Well, it’s to let air escape the tire. Some companies have holes drilled in the rim for this, but in a dirt racing environment, this allows dirt to enter the wheel/tire without a way to escape. Having the holes in the tire, the dirt naturally has a way to escape and is forced out through rotation. If your wheels have holes, we usually tape over them when using this technique. Next we take a small piece of sandpaper and scuff the beads of the tire (both sides). This allows for the glue to adhere better to the rubber surface.

Servo Upgrades

Here you can decide whether or not you need to upgrade to Servo motors from the standard stepper motors we use on our own machines. Servos have a higher torque curve, which means they do not loose the torque at the higher speeds. So if you are wanting to route through the thickest and hardest materials as fast as you possibly can, and are building something like cabinets, then servos might be a better choice.
